Affenpinscher dog has harsh rough coat and a monkey-like expression ("Affe" means monkey in German). The history of the breed dates back to the seventeenth century. Originally Affenpinscher dogs were used to control rodents in stables, but eventually they served as companion dogs and to keep mice out of the home. It is one of the oldest toy dogs.

The breed is affectionate, lively, and confident towards family members and also very protective and loyal. Affenpinscher dog typically enjoys being with its family. It needs firm and consitent training. Some can be quite difficult to housebreak because the dog can easily become bored, therefore it's recommended to use variation in training.

Affenpinscher dogs can be territorial when it comes to food and toys. Because of this, they are not recommended for very small children. This dog is small in size, but fearless and bold if threatened. Affenpinscher adapts well with a firm owner in city life.

The typical lifespan of this breed is around 11 years.
