The Alaskan Malamute dog was bred by the Mahlemuits tribe in western Alaska. The dogs were formerly used as freighting dogs and to pull sleds. They have great endurance and perform well in inclement weather.

Alaskan Malamute dog has a deep chest and muscular body. The head is deep and broad with almond-shaped eyes and triangular, erect ears. The coat is heavy and thick.

Because of its gentle personality, this dog makes an excellent companion dog. It is also playful, affectionate, and intelligent. However, training can be difficult because it gets bored easily.

Some people have observed that Alaskan Malamute breed does poorly living with smaller size animals. This might be due to the fact that the breed has a history of living in the wilderness with man surrounded by other domesticated animals of approximately the same size. While Malamutes aren't normally thought of as territorial dogs, they may react unfavorably to unfamiliar house guests.

Alaskan Malamute dogs do well in cooler climate and they prefer to be outdoors in the winter to enjoy the snow. This breed needs to live with an active owner in a suburban or country home.
