Australian Shepherd dogs are medium-size, athletic dogs, originally used as herding dogs by farmers in early 1920s. Despite the name, the breed, commonly known as an Aussie, did not originate in Australia.
Like all working breeds, the Aussie has considerable energy and drive and usually needs a job to keep the dog active.
They have almond-shaped eyes, with variety in the eye color. Aussie eyes may be amber, brown, hazel, green, or blue; and may have two different colored eyes.
Australian Shepherd dogs make good watchdogs, they do best with plenty of human companionship and may form devoted bonds with select people.
The Australian Shepherd has a reputation as a highly intelligent and versatile stock dog with a range of working styles, and best matched with family with active life style in suburban or rural home.
