This breed was a mix of rough-coated terriers and other British terriers. It was first used as a watchdog, to help control snakes and rodents, and also as companion dog. Official breed status was granted in the UK in 1933 and in the US in 1960. The Australian Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1969. Australian Terrier has small, and sturdy body, with pointed, small, erect ears, black nose, and dark brown or black eyes. This breed is considered as one of the smallest working terriers. It is self confident, friendly, but wary with strangers. It gets along well with children and other animals with proper socialization. It has high energy level, so daily exercise and activities are required to keep the dog healthy and well balanced. Australian Terrier does well with an active family in the city, suburban, or country. This breed is a natural born digger, if you are an owner and a gardener, you need to keep your dog away from the garden or he might make a mess when trying to catch snakes or other creatures.
