The Basenji is a hunting dog, one of the oldest of all dog breeds. Basenji was discovered by Pygmy hunters in the lands of the African Congo. These dogs were used as pack hunters to drive small game into net traps.

In the 1800s Basenji dogs were brought to England, but most of them did not survive due to distemper. Later the term "Basenji" was made the official name of this particular dog breed. It means "bush thing". More and more of these dogs were imported to England and eventually they came to America.

Basenji dogs started to grow in popularity at a rapid pace, and eventually, fanciers of this breed began to drive the popularity even more in dog shows around the country.

Basenji dogs are fastidious about grooming, and most do not like getting wet. They are highly intelligent and learn quickly. Basenji dogs are considered to be extremely feisty and often display behaviors that are similar to Terriers. They can be aloof with strangers but form strong bonds with their owners. If not supervised or trained properly, Basenjis can become bored and destructive when left alone.

They also have a very strong sense of territory, and can be very hostile towards other dogs in those areas. You will notice that this breed does not bark much, if at all, but when it does bark it comes out as a short yelp-like shriek.

This dog absolutely loves to chase and hunt any chance it can get. It's genetic roots are that of a hunter and so the Basenji dogs need plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and play.

Taking care of Basenji is fairly easy. Their needs of daily exercise both physically and mentally can be met by brisk walks and vigorous dog games, especially chasing and fetching.

This dog loves to have the freedom to roam around outside. Allowing your Basenji to play outside is advisable, if you have a big fenced yard. Healhty Basenji dogs have a lifespan of up to 15 years.
