The bloodhound is a large dog breed in scent hound group. These dogs were originally bred for the task of tracking scent of human beings, often used by the law enforcement to track missing persons. They are good trailing dogs, and they can follow scent even several days old. Its excellent tracking skills were drawn on in breeding other scent hounds, such as the American Foxhound, English Foxhound, Coonhound, and others. Unlike other scent hounds, Bloodhounds are usually silent when trailing.
The Bloodhound has a lazy facial expression, but do not let these characteristics fool you. This dog can be an extremely focused and energetic tracker once he catches a trail scent. The bloodhound is known to be very independent, and can be a bit stubborn.
Bloodhounds are not considered to be the most easiest to train. But these dogs make excelent house pet because of their friendly, affectionate and gentle personality. Typically, it does well living with a patient and active owner in a rural or suburban home.
Due to its hunting heritage, the bloodhounds need an average amount of daily exercise. They may appear mellow and laid back, but their full energy is release when on the trail. Be sure to keep them in a fenced area so they do not wander off as they sometimes do when their attention is focused on something.
Because of its large facial features and heavy wrinkles, the bloodhound needs grooming and brushing on a regular basis. Give an extra care to the ears, the flaps around the eyes and gums.
