Later the breed went through cross-breed development with Affenpinschers, Pugs, and English Toy Spaniels. In the late 1800s, Griffon Bruxellois grew in popularity and they are used as companion dogs, instead of ratters. The Griffon is a small, toy dog with a flat face and large wide-set eyes. The ears are semi-erect, although sometimes cropped. The body is compact and muscular. It often feels heavier than it is for such a small size. Brussels Griffons are known to be intelligent, confident, inquisitive and sensitive. It can be challenging to train sometimes. Early socialization is necessary for this breed to make sure they get along with children and strangers. A Griffon tends to bond only with one human, and it will be very unhappy if left outdoors or alone most of the day. They can get along well with other animals in the house, including cats, ferrets, and other dogs. However, they can get into trouble because of their small size. This breed has low energy level and it does well living in a suburban or city homes.
