Early Chinese Cresteds were commonly used as ratters on ships. This breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1991.

There are two varieties: Hairless and Powderpuff, which the hairlessness one the most common. The Hairless type has soft skin, as well as tufts of fur on its paws and tail, with long, flowing hair on its head. The amount of hair on the hairless variety varies quite extensively from no hair to what is called a hairy hairless. This type usually has gray and pink skin.

The Powderpuff has a thick, long and soft double coat.

Due to its coat type, both Powderpuff and Hairless are considered good pets for allergy sufferers.

Chinese Crested dogs are social, they are not considered to be a "one-person" dog. They are good with children and other animals with proper socialization. They do best living in a city or suburban home.

Taking Care of Your Chinese Crested Dog
The Powderpuffs have a very soft and fine double-coat that can grow quite long. It needs full brushing to avoid matting. Some owners choose to put their Puffs into a "pony cut" for a lower-maintenance option.

The Hairless variety has skin similar to human skin, thus requires maintenance to prevent dryness, sunburn, or even acne. It also need bathing at least 2 times per week to avoid skin conditions. Moisturizing cream is recommended to keep the skin from becoming too dry when applied every other day or after bathing. Owners may apply sunscreen if the dog is taken out to a strong sun area.
Trimming or shaving is also recommended.
