Experts agree that Chinese Shar-Pei dogs may be connected to the Chow Chow, both are originated from China. Wrinkly dogs were depicted in writings and other literatures during this time. These dogs may have even existed in the southern China, approximately 200 B.C.

Its history is harder to trace because when China became communist country, most of the records that relate to the Chinese Shar-Pei were destroyed.
During this time these dogs was used by peasant farmers as guard dogs, or as hunter of wild boars.

During this periode, the majority of the country's dogs were completely eliminated. A few existed outside of city areas and several Shar-Pei dogs were bred in Taiwan and Hong Kong, which eventually recognized by the Hong Kong Kennel Club in 1968.

It was during this time Chinese Shar-Pei breed made their way to the United States. Dog fanciers became familiar with the breed when an article was published that explains the breed's alarmingly low numbers.

The Chinese Shar-Pei dogs was considered one of the world's rarest dogs. Some of the dog enthusiasts made their best efforts to revive the breed. Their efforts were paid off, the breed went from the brink of extinction and rose to new heights of popularity. Chinese Shar-Pei dogs are one of the most recognizable breeds in the United States today.

The Chinese Shar-Pei are independent, bold, and stubborn. Some people describe them as 'self-possessed'. However, don't let its rough-edged attitude fool you. These dogs are highly devoted, loyal and protective of their family, well-behaved around other pets in the house but may be overly aggressive towards strange dogs and other animals.

Taking Care Of Your Chinese Shar-Pei

Chinese Shar-Pei need daily exercise and mental stimulation. Activities such as fetching games and long walks are plenty to fulfill these needs. This breed is not necessarily suited for all-around outdoor living, so it's best to divide its time between being inside and outside.

Chinese Shar-Pei dogs have an average life span of approximately 10 years. The breed requires minimal grooming. It's recommended to do brushing approximately one time weekly. Extra attention will be needed for the dog's facial wrinkles, also check the skin folds to make sure there is no sin irritation.
