This is one of the most popular breed in the US. The original purpose for the German Shepherd Dog was to herd sheep, cattle, or other animals. They are strong and highly intelligent. Raised improperly they may become destructive or even dangerous. They can adapt to city, rural, or suburban life, and do well with owners who provide good amount of exercise.

Nowadays, they are widely used as search and rescue dogs, narcotics, explosive, or mine detection dogs.
