The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the oldest of Swiss herding breeds, and it is believed resulted from crosses of Roman mastiffs and local Swiss dogs. The breed was originally used as a watchdog or draft dog by farmers and merchants. During the World War II, this breed served as military dog.

It came to the US in 1968 and it was recognized by the AKC in 1985 and received full recognition in 1995. The breed was recognized by the UKC in 1992.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, or sometimes called "Swissy", is protective and gentle, particularly towards its family and children. It is devoted, stable and territorial, but not aggressive. It is also considered strong, active, and remarkably agile for its size. It is also excel at herding and pack hikes.

Unlike other mountain dogs, they do not drool excessively. It does well with an active and experienced owner in a rural or suburban home. Prospective owners need to give them lots of time and attention.
