The Harrier dog is a member of the scenthound family and originally came from Great Britain. The term “Harrier” initially was used for a general reference to all hounds which makes it difficult to trace the history of this breed. Theory goes that Harrier dogs may in fact be one of the oldest of scent hounds that are still in existence today.
It is possible that Harrier dog breed has ancestry that connects with the Talbot dog (which is extinct today), St. Hubert hounds, Brachet dogs, and eventually the French Basset. The result was a dog that had a keen ability to track hare with its strong sense of scent and at a pace slow enough that enabled hunters that did not have horses to keep up with them on foot.
The Harrier dogs look similar to English Foxhound and Beagle. They have short hair, hanging ears, and come in a variety of color patterns. Its cheerful, sweet-tempered, tolerant personality makes this breed good choice as a family dog. Harrier is good with children and other dogs, but should be supervised with non-canine pets unless it is raised with them from puppyhood.
They are extremely sociable and need companionship at all times. They like to go exploring, sniffing, and trailing, so be sure to keep it on a leash or in a safe enclosed area. Like most dogs, Harriers need daily physical exercise such as a long walk or a brisk jog out on the trail. It also loves to play vigorous dog games outside.
Grooming requirements for Harrier dogs are minimal, only the occasional brushing to remove loose hair. And they do best living with active person in a rural or suburban home.
