Mastiff, or English Mastiff, is a large dog breed of Molosser type. It is recognized as the oldest British breed, descended from Alaunt and Molosser. It was originally bred for the purpose of guarding, and companion dogs, although some people used them in dog fighting, bull-baiting, and bear-baiting sports. The development of this breed led to a number of other dog breeds.

In general, it is a good-natured, calm, and gentle dog. Having bred for guarding, it is also an excellent watchdog. If a stranger approach, a Mastiff will immediately position itself in front of its master. If the dog senses a danger, it will take immediate defensive action. English Mastiffs are known to be one of the best guard dogs.

A Mastiff would make an excellent choice as family pet. This dog is adaptable, patient, and affectionate. They get along with children and other pets. This dog needs plenty of room to move about and would not be ideal for small apartment living. Before deciding to get a Mastiff, consider the financial ability to provide the needs of this giant-size dog.

Taking Care of Your Mastiff Dog

Mastiff dogs have low energy level, a mild amount of daily exercise such as 10 to 15 minute brisk walk would do just fine. This breed is not fond of hot weather at all. It thrives on cooler temperatures so be sure to provide shading area in the hot summer months if he is to be kept outside.

One interesting aspect that pertains to the health of the Mastiff dog breed is its weight. They are easily prone to becoming overweight or obese. Be sure to monitor his food intake and watch out not to overfeed him. A healthy Mastiff has an average lifespan between 9 and 11 years.
