
Saint Bernard is a large dog breed that came from Switzerland. The name "Saint Bernard" originates from a traveler's hospice on the often treacherous St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Switzerland and Italy. The dogs were used as guarding, drafting, search and rescue dogs. It is believed that this breed descended from Roman mastiffs.
Saint Bernard is friendly and affectionate with its family, even to strangers. This breed is not a good choice as guard dog.
Saint Bernard dogs need good amount of exercise because of their weight. Many dogs are affected by hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia.
Saint Bernard dog does best with owner in a rural or suburban home, where neatness is not a concern. This breed can adapt living in the city as long as there is enough room.
