Saluki dog is a member of the sight-hound group. It is considered to be the most ancient of all dog breeds, based on evidence found in art work on Egyptian tombs that are dated thousands of years B.C.
The Saluki breed has been kept amazingly pure. This is largely due to the fact that they were not allowed to breed with other dogs outside of its race, a practice that was adhered to for thousands of years. Variation of the breed started to emerge when Salukis were widely distributed throughout the Middle East by many nomadic owners.
During the year 1900, Saluki dogs were started to gain attention by the Western world. It did not take long for this breed to catch on its popularity. The AKC officially recognized this breed in 1928.
Saluki dog would be described best as calm, reserved around strangers but are loyal and affectionate towards their owners. These dogs are great with children but may be too quiet and gentle for most kids to be entertained.
This breed retains the qualities of hunting hounds. They learn quickly but can get bored with repetition, so training sessions should be short and varied. They love human companionship, when they feel that something is wrong or when a member of the family is away for a long period of time, they would make a sound as if ‘singing’.
Saluki dogs require daily exercise, preferably running in an open space outdoors. They love to sprint but if the outside is not safe for them to run around in, their physical requirements can be met with a nice brisk walk on the leash several times each day.
Because of their strong prey drive, Saluki dogs should not be allowed off leash. A fenced yard is highly recommended.
Saluki dogs can handle both hot and cold climates, and can even play outside in the snow. However, it's best to keep this dog indoors at night with access to the outside during the daytime. They do well with active family in the suburban or country.
Because they look very skinny, many people wrongly assume that they are sick or underfed . However, this assumption is false. They are naturally thin dogs that do not put on weight easily. The average lifespan of a healthy Saluki dog is between 12 and 15 years.
