They were used as hunter, reindeer herd, and sled dogs. In the nineteenth and twentieth century some Western polar explorers came and they brought home some of these dogs. Pretty soon the breed became popular with the British aristocracy, and shortly after it was brought to the US. Samoyeds are friendly dogs, this trait makes them poor guard dogs. However, they have a tendency to bark when something approaches their territory. Samoyed dogs are affectionate and gentle, they are good as companions, especially for small children or even other dogs. They are lively and playful, and they retain these as they grow old. Samoyeds can be stubborn and difficult to train difficult to train, they often must be persuaded to obey commands. Samoyed dogs have a zeal for life and lots of energy.
