Schnauzers are descended from herding and guardian dog breeds. They are social and intelligent, easy to train and they make great family companions. They have high energy and do best with active owners. They adapt easily in the city, suburban and rural setting. They are very gentle with young children if properly trained.

They have been used for drug and bomb detection dogs, and also for Search-and-Rescue dogs. Standard Schnauzer is the prototype of the Giant and Miniature Schnauzers.
